Chapter 21

1 Now Jehoshaphat3092 slept7901 with5973 his fathers,1 and was buried6912 with5973 his fathers1 in the city5892 of David.1732 And Jehoram3088 his son1121 reigned4427 in his stead.8478

2 And he had brethren251 the sons1121 of Jehoshaphat,3092 Azariah,5838 and Jehiel,3171 and Zechariah,2148 and Azariah,5838 and Michael,4317 and Shephatiah:8203 all3605 these428 were the sons1121 of Jehoshaphat3092 king4428 of Israel.3478

3 And their father1 gave5414 them great7227 gifts4979 of silver,3701 and of gold,2091 and of precious things,4030 with5973 fenced4694 cities5892 in Judah:3063 but the kingdom4467 gave5414 he to Jehoram;3088 because3588 he1931 was the firstborn.1060

4 Now when Jehoram3088 was risen up6965 to5921 the kingdom4467 of his father,1 he strengthened himself,2388 and slew2026 853 all3605 his brethren251 with the sword,2719 and divers also1571 of the princes4480 8269 of Israel.3478

5 Jehoram3088 was thirty7970 and two8147 years8141 old1121 when he began to reign,4427 and he reigned4427 eight8083 years8141 in Jerusalem.3389

6 And he walked1980 in the way1870 of the kings4428 of Israel,3478 like as834 did6213 the house1004 of Ahab:256 for3588 he had1961 the daughter1323 of Ahab256 to wife:802 and he wrought6213 that which was evil7451 in the eyes5869 of the LORD.3068

7 Howbeit the LORD3068 would14 not3808 destroy7843 853 the house1004 of David,1732 because of4616 the covenant1285 that834 he had made3772 with David,1732 and as834 he promised559 to give5414 a light5216 to him and to his sons1121 forever.3605 3117

8 In his days3117 the Edomites123 revolted6586 from under4480 8478 the dominion3027 of Judah,3063 and made4427 5921 themselves a king.4428

9 Then Jehoram3088 went forth5674 with5973 his princes,8269 and all3605 his chariots7393 with5973 him: and he rose up1961 6965 by night,3915 and smote5221 853 the Edomites123 which compassed5437 413 him in, and the captains8269 of the chariots.7393

10 So the Edomites123 revolted6586 from under4480 8478 the hand3027 of Judah3063 unto5704 this2088 day.3117 The same1931 time6256 also did Libnah3841 revolt6586 from under4480 8478 his hand;3027 because3588 he had forsaken5800 853 the LORD3068 God430 of his fathers.1

11 Moreover1571 he1931 made6213 high places1116 in the mountains2022 of Judah,3063 and caused853 the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389 to commit fornication,2181 and compelled5080 853 Judah3063 thereto.

12 And there came935 a writing4385 to413 him from Elijah4480 452 the prophet,5030 saying,559 Thus3541 saith559 the LORD3068 God430 of David1732 thy father,1 Because8478 834 thou hast not3808 walked1980 in the ways1870 of Jehoshaphat3092 thy father,1 nor in the ways1870 of Asa609 king4428 of Judah,3063

13 But hast walked1980 in the way1870 of the kings4428 of Israel,3478 and hast made853 Judah3063 and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389 to go a whoring,2181 like to the whoredoms2181 of the house1004 of Ahab,256 and also1571 hast slain2026 853 thy brethren251 of thy father's1 house,1004 which were better2896 than4480 thyself:

14 Behold,2009 with a great1419 plague4046 will the LORD3068 smite5062 thy people,5971 and thy children,1121 and thy wives,802 and all3605 thy goods: 7399

15 And thou859 shalt have great7227 sickness2483 by disease4245 of thy bowels,4578 until5704 thy bowels4578 fall out3318 by reason of4480 the sickness2483 day3117 by5921 day.3117

16 Moreover the LORD3068 stirred up5782 against5921 Jehoram3088 853 the spirit7307 of the Philistines,6430 and of the Arabians,6163 that834 were near5921 3027 the Ethiopians: 3569

17 And they came up5927 into Judah,3063 and broke into1234 it, and carried away7617 853 all3605 the substance7399 that was found4672 in the king's4428 house,1004 and his sons1121 also,1571 and his wives;802 so that there was never3808 a son1121 left7604 him, save3588 518 Jehoahaz,3059 the youngest6996 of his sons.1121

18 And after310 all3605 this2063 the LORD3068 smote5062 him in his bowels4578 with an incurable369 4832 disease.2483

19 And it came to pass,1961 that in process of time,3117 4480 3117 after the end6256 3318 7093 of two8147 years,3117 his bowels4578 fell out3318 by reason of5973 his sickness:2483 so he died4191 of sore7451 diseases.8463 And his people5971 made6213 no3808 burning8316 for him, like the burning8316 of his fathers.1

20 Thirty7970 and two8147 years old1121 was1961 he when he began to reign,4427 and he reigned4427 in Jerusalem3389 eight8083 years,8141 and departed1980 without3808 being desired.2532 Howbeit they buried6912 him in the city5892 of David,1732 but not3808 in the sepulchers6913 of the kings.4428

Chapter 21

1 NOW Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

2 And he had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat, and these are their names: Azariah, Nahjaiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Malchael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Judah.

3 And their father gave them great gifts of silver and of gold, and many other gifts, with fortified cities in Judah; but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram because he was his first-born.

4 Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself and slew all his brothers in the battle and also slew some of the elders of Israel.

5 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

6 And he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab; for Ahab's sister was his wife; and he did that which was evil in the presence of the LORD.

7 However the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David anti because he had promised to give an heir to him and to his sons for ever.

8 In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.

9 Then Jehoram crossed over the Jordan with his princes, and all his chariots with him; and he rose up by night and smote the Edomites who had surrounded him and the captains of the chariots.

10 So the Edomites revolted from the dominion of Judah to this day. At the same time also did the Edomites who dwelt in Libnah revolt from his rule, because Jehoram had forsaken the LORD God of his fathers.

11 Moreover he made shrines on high places in the mountains of Judah and caused the Nazarites of Jerusalem to drink wine and scattered the house of Judah.

12 And there was brought to him a letter from Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus says the LORD God of David your father: Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah,

13 But have walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go astray with the whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and also have Main your brothers, your father's sons, who were better than yourself;

14 Behold, the LORD will smite you with a great plague, together with your people, your children, your wives, and all your goods;

15 And you yourself shall die with a severe sickness; and you shall be consumed with a great torment until your bowels fall out because of your sickness. And you shall be tormented for many years.

16 Moreover the LORD stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines and of the Arabians who dwelt near the Ethiopians;

17 And they came up against Judah and smote it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king's house, and his sons also and his wives; so that no son was left to him except Ahaziah his youngest son.

18 And after all this he was smitten in his bowels with an incurable disease.

19 And it came to pass that in the process of time, after the end of two years, the word of the prophet was fulfilled, his bowels fell out because of his sickness; so he died of sore disease. And his people did not honor him with a funeral according to the manner they had done for his fathers.

20 He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem, and his departure was not regretted. And he was buried in the city of David his father, but not in the sepulchres of the kings.
